The Canisius women's soccer defeated the Iona Gaels this afternoon, 1-0, moving their overall record to 4-9-2 on the season.
“Without a doubt this was our best effort of the season,” said head coach Todd Clark. “We combined resolute defending with a solid attack for our best result this year.”
Scoring the winning goal for the Golden Griffins was freshman Emily Czechowski. The goal, which came in the 83rd minute of play, was the first in Czechowski's young career.
Senior goaltender Kailee DeFranks pitched the shutout for the Griffs, recording eight saves off of 10 total shots. The shutout win is the second on the year for DeFranks.
The goal by Czechowski was scored off of a free kick that came from fellow freshman Ronja Gustaffson.
The victory gives the Griffs a 2-4-0 MAAC record and is the team's second win on the road this year.
“The players ought to be really proud of their effort,” said Clark. “No question this is a satisfying win and I am proud of them.”
Canisius will look to duplicate the gutty performance next Saturday Oct. 17 when they take on Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. at the Demske Sports Complex.
