Manhattan junior Shane Richards recorded his first career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and the visiting Jaspers held Canisius to just two points in the game's final 6:06 en route to a 63-60 victory Sunday afternoon in the Koessler Athletic Center. Manhattan improves to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in MAAC play with the win, while the Golden Griffins dropped their second-straight to fall to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
Canisius redshirt-freshman Jermaine Crumpton scored a career-high 16 points in the loss, while senior Josiah Heath added 10 points. Sophomore Phil Valenti was good for nine points and seven rebounds for the Blue and Gold and senior Jeremiah Williams came off the bench to post nine points and five assists. In the loss, Canisius shot 39.9 percent from the field, a season-low 14.3 percent from 3-point land and season-low 52.0 percent (13-for-25) from the free-throw line while just turning the ball over just seven times.
"Manhattan is a good team, they went to the NCAA Tournament last year and they hit some really big shots today," Canisius head coach Jim Baron said. "To be totally honest, I thought our defense was weak at times today. We need to be more consistent defensively. Give [Shane] Richards credit. He was the difference today. He reminded me a lot of my oldest son Jimmy. He made shot after shot and they worked to get him the ball because he was feeling it a bit."
Richards ended the day by making five 3-point field goals, with his last one coming at the 5:41 mark of the second half to give Manhattan a 59-58 lead, a lead the Jaspers would not relinquish down the stretch. After both teams came up empty on back-to-back possessions, Manhattan's RaShawn Stores hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with less than five seconds left on the shot clock to give the Jaspers a 62-58 lead with 2:47 left to play. Canisius answered with a bucket from sophomore Phil Valenti 27 seconds later to get within two at 62-60, but Manhattan guard Tyler Wilson ended the scoring with 1:08 left on the clock after he made 1-of-2 from the foul line to make the score 63-60.
With 48 seconds left to play, Canisius had a chance to get the lead back, but came with no points. As the Griffs fouled Manhattan center Ashton Pankey to stop the clock, he was called for a contact technical foul, which gave the Blue and Gold two free-throws and the ball. Canisius missed both charity tosses and then missed a pair of lay-ups with less than 30 seconds to play. After Manhattan missed the front end of a 1-and-1 at its end, Canisius had a chance to tie the game late, but sophomore Zach Lewis' 3-point attempt from the top of the key with 4.6 seconds left hit the back iron and Manhattan left the Koessler Athletic Center with the victory.
Manhattan shot 48.8 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from 3-point land in the win while holding a 33-32 advantage on the glass. Canisius out scored Manhattan 24-18 in the paint and 17-10 in second-chance points, and the Griffs held a 31-19 advantage in points scored off then bench.
The Griffs will play their first road game in nearly a month on Thursday, Jan. 8, when the team travels to play at Marist. Game time in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., is set for 7 p.m.
