Women's Basketball Moves To 3-0 In MAAC Play

Box Score

The Canisius women's basketball team returned to conference play and continued its unbeaten start to the MAAC schedule with a 56-45 win at Manhattan College in the Draddy Gymnasium on Friday night. The Golden Griffins snap a four-game losing streak and improve to 5-7 overall and 3-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Junior Jasmine Mungo posted her first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to go along with five steals, all career highs for Mungo. Senior Kayla Hoohuli scored a game-high 16 points and drained four 3-pointers.  Canisius shot 40 percent for the game and held Manhattan to 27.8 percent from the field. The Griffs had 14 assists on 20 made baskets, led by four assists apiece from junior Tiahana Mills and sophomore Tamara Miskovic.

“We've learned through the years that it's rarely easy to snap losing streaks, and tonight proved to be the case once again,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We battled to get a road win, in a place where we haven't won for a number of years.”

The teams combined for 26 turnovers in a sloppy first half. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Maeve Parahus gave Manhattan (1-11, 0-3 MAAC) a 15-12 lead with 6:55 left in the first half. Canisius closed the half on a 10-2 run that saw the Griffs take a 22-17 lead into the locker room. Back-to-back baskets from Mills started the run that was capped by two free throws with 20 seconds left from junior Crystal Porter.

The Griffs extended their run to 16-4 and built a 28-19 lead as they held Manhattan without a field goal for more than a 11-minute stretch spanning the two halves. Mungo scored six of the 16 Canisius points during that run, which was capped by a jumper from sophomore Lauren D'Hont. Manhattan used a 11-2 run to tie the game at 30-30 with 10:29 left, but Canisius never gave up the lead as Hoohuli came down and nailed a 3-pointer on the next possession.

Hoohuli scored eight straight points for the Griffs as they went up 38-32. After another 3-pointer from Parahus, a 3-pointer from freshman Margret Halfdanardottir started another run for Canisius. The Griffs used a 12-5 spurt to build a double-digit lead with 1:18 left on the fourth 3-pointer of the game by Hoohuli.

Parahus led Manhattan with 12 points and shot 4-for-7 from behind the arc.

Canisius wraps up its trip to the New York City area against Iona College on Sunday, with tipoff in New Rochelle set for 2 p.m.

Notes: Canisius starts 3-0 in the MAAC for the fifth time in program history… Canisius swept the season series from Manhattan for the first time since the 2008-09 season, which is also the last time the Griffs won in Riverdale as Canisius snapped a five-game losing streak in the Draddy Gymnasium… Mungo is the first Canisius player with at least 15 points, 10 rebounds and five steals since Brittané Russell (18 points, 12 rebounds and six steals) against Fairfield on Jan. 10, 2008… Hoohuli matched her career high with the four 3-pointers, making four 3-pointers for the 10th time in her career… Mills extended her streak of consecutive games with a steal to 24 games, matching Russell and Jessie Lamparski for the seventh longest streak in the program's Division I era.
