Women's Basketball Gets Road Win at Saint Peter's

The Canisius women's basketball team moved to 4-4 in MAAC play behind 14 points and seven rebounds from junior Crystal Porter, as the Golden Griffins defeated the Saint Peter's Peacocks, 57-45. With the victory, Canisius improves to 6-11 overall and is back to .500 in conference play, the loss drops the Peacocks to 1-15 on the season and 1-6 in the MAAC.

The Griffs were led by Porter's 14 points, but all five starters for Canisius scored at least six points. Junior guard Tiahana Mills had nine points, five assists and four rebounds while senior Kayla Hoohuli chipped in eight points in the victory. For the game, the Griffs shot 35.7 from the field, made 77.8 percent of their free-throws but shot only 20.0 percent from behind the arc.

The Blue and Gold out rebounded the Peacocks 40-32, including 16 offensive rebounds to the home-team's nine.Second-chance points were also a difference for Canisius, as the Griffs had 14 compared to Saint Peter's two.

Canisius went on a 5-0 run to close out the first half of play, and the Griffs would never look back. Canisius went into the locker room with a 27-21 lead at the half and led by at least six points the rest of the game.

The Griffs were up by as much as 13 in the second half, and the Blue and Gold ended the game on a 8-3 run, started by an Emily Weber free-throw with 6:04 left to play in regulation. Jasmie Mungo would hit a couple of free-throws down the stretch and the forward sealed the win, putting the Griffs up 57-45, with a lay-up with a minute left to play.

Saint Peter's was led by Talah Hughes, who was 4-for-6 from the field and had 11 points and Antonia Smith chipped in 10 points in the losing effort.

Canisius will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 21 when the team travels north to meet long-time rival Niagara. Tipoff in the Gallagher Center is set for 7 p.m.

Game Notes: This was the 56th all-time meeting between the two Jesuit schools, with Saint Peter's holding a 30-26 lead in the series... Sunday's win gives Canisius a sweep of the regular-season series against the Peacocks... Canisius has now beaten Saint Peter's in five-straight games and head coach Terry Zeh improves his career record to 18-7 all-time against the Peacocks... Porter's 14 points in the win are a season-high for the forward... The Griffs' defense has held its opponents under 40 percent shooting in five of the team's six wins this season... Canisius is now 4-0 this season when holding opponents to less than 59 points in a game... The Griffs are 118-37 under Zeh when leading at halftime.
