All 11 Canisius players scored at least one point, led by sophomore Phil Valenti and his game-high 22, and the host Golden Griffins held Siena to 29.4 percent from the field, as the Blue and Gold cruised to an 83-49 win over Siena Friday night in the Koessler Athletic Center. The win moves Canisius to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in MAAC play while the Saints slipped to 6-10 overall and 3-4 in conference action.
The 34-point victory is Canisius' largest regular-season MAAC win since Feb. 8, 1997, when the Griffs defeated Fairfield 91-45, and the win stands as the largest margin of victory for Canisius over Siena since March 1, 1997 when the Blue and Gold defeated the Saints 84-40 in the MAAC Tournament. The Griffs out scored Siena 38-22 in the paint, 32-10 in points off turnovers and 42-12 in bench points en route to the team's fifth-straight win over their long-time MAAC rivals.
Canisius senior Jeremiah Williams was good for 12 points, a career-high six steals and three assists in the win, as the Griffs ended the night shooting 49.1 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from 3-point range and 82.6 percent from the free-throw line. Redshirt-freshman Kassius Robertson scored a career-high 10 points off the bench for the Griffs, while senior Josiah Heath added eight points and two steals to the winning effort.
Siena was led by sophomore guard Marquis Wright, who scored a team-high 14 points in the loss. He also added nine rebounds for Siena, which ended the night with a 44-29 advantage on the glass. Siena shot just 20 percent from 3-point range and turned the ball over 22 times.
"I thought this was a really good team effort here tonight," Canisius head coach Jim Baron said. "Siena was without some really key parts, including [senior] Rob Poole, who is a good as any guard in our league. I thought Jeremiah Williams really made a major difference for us tonight at both ends of the floor. He came in and gave us a spark. He played with confidence and kept his man in front of him on defense. We ask guys to step up for us and tonight is another example of the guys listening and working hard."
Canisius jumped out to an early 9-2 lead just 4:54 into the contest and never looked back. Siena was able to cut Canisius' margin to six at 18-12 after Javion Ogunyemi scored a lay-up, but the Griffs pulled away with a 12-1 run over the next 5:50 for a 30-13 lead with 4:25 left before the halftime break. After trailing 35-22 at halftime, Siena scored the first two points of the second half on two made free-throws by senior Evan Hymes, but that would be the last points for the Saints for more than 4:52 of game action, as the Griffs pushed their lead to 25 points at 49-24 with 15:03 left in the contest following a Williams 3-pointer from the top of the key.
Valenti ended the contest with five assists and two steals and he also went a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line in the win for Canisius. Sophomore Zach Lewis and redshirt-freshman Jermaine Crumpton added seven points apiece in the victory, while freshman Cassidy Ryan came off the bench and scored a career-high seven points as well in seven minutes of action.
The Griffs will return to action Sunday, Jan. 18, when the team takes on Iona in the Koessler Athletic Center. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
