Box Score The Canisius volleyball team lost in three sets to Rider University in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins lost 25-20, 25-19, 25-19 and saw their conference record even at 2-2 on the season.
Junior Rachel Kline and sophomore Katlyn Tyler each had a team-high nine kills on the day while Kline also posted 10 digs. Junior Grace Streicher recorded 28 assists and eight digs.
“Rider showed a lot more energy, emotion and courage in that match today,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “It's disappointing that we couldn't answer Rider in that area, as it carried over to the scoreboard and rewarded Rider with the win.”
The teams played a tight first set, which featured 10 ties. Rider (8-7, 3-0 MAAC) went up 16-12 before Canisius used a 5-1 run to know the score at 17-17 on a block from Streicher and sophomore Jacklyn Malusa. Canisius could never take the lead down the stretch as the Broncs closed the set on a 6-1 run of their own to win the opening set.
Both teams posted high attack percentages in the second set, with Canisius hitting .385 and Rider hitting .433. Rider broke open the set with a six-point run, going up 14-7 as Canisius would never get closer than five points the rest of the way.
Canisius gained some momentum in the third set, using a 4-1 run to take a 13-10 lead. Out of a timeout, Rider would regain control by scoring 11 of the next 13 points as Canisius could never fight back into the match.
Kaitlyn Griffin led Rider with 15 kills and hit .682 in the match as Rider posted a team attack percentage of .353. Jennifer Borio had nine kills on 14 attack attempts.
Canisius (2-11, 2-2 MAAC) wraps up its three-match homestand on Saturday, when the Golden Griffins host rival Niagara University. Match time for the Battle of the Bridge contest is set for 1 p.m. in the KAC.
Notes: The win by Rider snapped a 16-match winning streak by Canisius in the series, dating back to 2005… After matching its season high with 14 blocks on Saturday, the Griffs only had three blocks against Rider on Sunday… Canisius had a service reception percentage of .941, its third straight match over 94 percent after just two times in the opening 10 matches.
