Women's Soccer Tops Monmouth, 3-2

The Canisius women's soccer team defeated defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Monmouth (6-4-0, 1-1-0 MAAC) by a score of 3-2 Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

The Golden Griffins netted the first goal in the third minute of the match as sophomore Sabrina Fitzgerald scored on an assist by senior Mallory Illsley. It was Fitzgerald's first goal of the season and her third career goal.

Monmouth would strike back in the fifth minute as Alexa Freguletti scored the equalizer on a penalty kick. The Hawks would take the lead in the 27th minute on a goal by Julie Spracklin, giving the visiting squad the 2-1 lead. The Griffs wouldn't be down for long as freshman Rebecca Lederman scored her first collegiate goal in the 37th minute of the match, tying the game 2-2 right before the end of the half.

With 51 minutes gone by and the game tied 2-2, Illsley took matters into her own hands and scored the game winner in the 52nd minute of the match. Illsley got past the defense and freshman Taylor Kugler found her for the score. The goal was Illsley's first of the season.

Senior Brigid St. Leger started in net for the Griffs and the Cazenovia, N.Y., native put on a stellar performance. St. Leger made five saves on the day and also recorded an assist on the game-winning tally by Illsley.

With the win, Canisius is now 2-9-0 this season and has a 1-1-0 record in MAAC play. The Griffs next game will be Wednesday, Oct. 1, when the Blue and Gold plays host to long-time rival Niagara at the Demske Sports Complex. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Game Notes: The three goals for Canisius are the most for the team since the Blue and Gold defeated Saint Peter's at home last season by the score of 4-3... Canisius is the first MAAC school to beat Monmouth in a regular-season game... The Hawks went 8-0-2 in 2013 (the program's first year in the conference) and opened this year's league slate by defeating Siena... The was the seventh all-time meeting between the two programs, with Monmouth holding a 6-1-0 advantage in the series... The win gives the Griffs three-straight MAAC home victories, dating back to last season.
