The Canisius women's soccer team hosted MAAC rival Niagara University on Wednesday evening at the Demske Sports Complex and despite a strong game by the Blue and Gold, the team fell by a final score of 1-0.
The Golden Griffins (2-10-0, 1-2-0 MAAC) put on a solid showing against the Purple Eagles (6-1-3, 2-0-1 MAAC) in front of a large home crowd, but weren't able to get anything going offensively against the visiting squad.
Niagara scored the lone goal of the game in the 37th minute of play on a shot by Laura Ortiz. Ortiz scored off of a rebound from a shot by Eva Bachmann that hit the post.
Despite the goal, senior Brigid St. Leger had a very solid performance in net. The Cazenovia, N.Y., native made five saves in the game and made some key plays to keep the Purple Eagles off of the board.
Canisius totaled eight shots in the game with sophomore Kathleen Lawver (3) and senior Mallory Illsley (2) leading the way. Sabrina Fitzgerald had a chance to tie the game in the 54th minute on a breakaway but couldn't get it past the Purple Eagles goalkeeper.
The Griffs will play their next two MAAC games on the road, starting at Quinnipiac Oct. 4. Game time in Hamden, Conn., is set for 1 p.m.
