Box Score The Canisius volleyball team earned a split on the first weekend of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a sweep of Siena College in Loudonville on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins won 25-16, 25-16, 25-23 to sweep the Saints in the Alumni Recreation Center.
Sophomore Katlyn Tyler posted a match-high 15 kills and hit .407 on the day. Junior Rachel Kline totaled 12 kills and eight digs while junior Grace Streicher recorded 39 assists. Canisius totaled 10 blocks in the match, with Streicher leading the Griffs with five blocks.
“That is a great road win in three sets. We talked about playing to the standard we expect, and we finally saw that from our team today. We stuck to a game plan and executed it for the whole match,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “That's great to see after we struggled with that aspect on Saturday.”
Canisius hit .444 in the opening set, including five kills on five swings from Tyler. Canisius scored five straight points, including a service ace from junior Lauren Siebert along with a solo block from Streicher, to go up 20-14. The Griffs closed the set on a 10-2 run to win the opening set.
Canisius never trailed in the second set, winning the first three points and not looking back. The Griffs broke open a 6-4 score with a 4-1 run and never led by fewer than four points the rest of the set. Tyler added five more kills in the set while sophomore Jacklyn Malusa had four kills on four attack attempts.
Siena (3-10, 1-1 MAAC) led 10-7 in the third set before Canisius scored four straight points, capped by a solo block from freshman Kristin Bendy, to take an 11-10 lead. The Saints scored back-to-back points to regain the lead but a kill from Tyler knotted the score at 12-12, and Canisius wouldn't trail the rest of the way. With the score tied at 23-23, kills from Siebert and Kline closed out the match.
Canisius (1-10, 1-1 MAAC) plays in the Koessler Athletic Center for the first time in 2014, with two home matches next weekend. The Golden Griffins host Saint Peter's at 1 p.m. on Saturday
Notes: Canisius has won at Siena in four of the last five years after not recording a win in the ARC since 2003… Canisius hit a season-best .317 in the match and matched a season-best with five service aces… Canisius also had a season-low three service reception errors on the day… Malusa has at least four blocks in each of the last three matches… Kline has double-digit kills in four straight matches and nine times on the season… The 39 assists by Streicher are the most by a Golden Griffin in a three-set match in the 25-point, rally-scoring era (since 2008).
