The Canisius women's soccer team opened up MAAC play today, as the team traveled to Jersey City, N.J., to take on the Saint Peter's Peacocks. Despite a strong start to the match, the Griffs fell to the Peacocks by a final score of 3-1.
With the loss the Blue and Gold are now 1-8-0 this season and have a 0-1-0 record in the MAAC. Saint Peter's is now 1-7-0 and has a 1-0-0 record in conference play.
With her goal in the 34th minute, freshman Savannah Jonathan gave the Griffs the early 1-0 lead. It was Jonathan's first collegiate goal and the forward recorded four shots as well.
Greta Vogel from Saint Peter's had a hat trick in the game, scoring each of the Peacocks goals, with the first coming in the 77th minute. Vogel scored the game winner in the 78th minute and then recorded her final goal at the 83rd minute mark to cap off the win for the MAAC rival.
Senior Brigid St. Leger received the loss for the Golden Griffins, making four saves in the losing effort.
The Griffs return home on Saturday, Sep. 20 to take on Robert Morris at 1:00 p.m. at the Demske Sports Complex.
