The Canisius women's basketball team shot a season-high 51.8 percent and only committed five turnovers as the Golden Griffins defeated Saint Peter's 75-50 in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. Canisius wins its third straight game to even its record at 3-3 and also improves to 2-0 in the MAAC for the first time since 2005-06.

Four Golden Griffins reached double figures, with senior Kayla Hoohuli and junior Tiahana Mills each scoring 14 points, with Mills adding four assists and three steals while not committing a turnover. Junior Jasmine Mungo scored a career-high 11 points while junior Crystal Porter scored 12 points, reaching double figures for the sixth straight game.

“That was a really good team win today as we did a good job of putting the game away in the second half when Saint Peter's made its run. I think we learned from that situation on Friday,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We did a good job of taking care of the basketball and ran a lot of good offense in the second half.”

Canisius answered a fast start by Saint Peter with a 12-0 run to take a 12-5 lead after a hook shot from sophomore Laniere Coleman. The Griffs held a 20-12 lead before Saint Peter's scored eight straight points to even the score at 20-20. Canisius closed the half on a 10-4 run in the final two and a half minutes, including 3-pointers from Hoohuli and Mills and two baskets from Mungo to put Canisius up by six at the half.

Canisius came out with a strong start to the second half with a 16-5 run, forcing five Saint Peter's turnovers during the opening five minutes. The Griffs extended the lead to 46-29 with just under 14 minutes remaining before Saint Peter's used an 11-1 run to cut the deficit to seven points at 47-40. Canisius out-scored Saint Peter's 27-10 the rest of the way as all 12 Canisius players on the roster saw playing time. That spurt started with a three-point play from Mills and saw eight Golden Griffins score in the final nine minutes.

Canisius continues it season-long four-game homestand on Thursday when the Golden Griffins host Binghamton in a game rescheduled from Nov. 19. Tipoff in the KAC is set for 7 p.m.

Notes: Canisius has now won 10 of the last 13 meetings between the teams… Canisius has won three straight games for the first time since Dec. 18-28, 2011… Porter has scored in double figures in all six games, the longest stretch to start a season since Megan Lyte (nine games) in 2005-06… Canisius shot over 50 percent in the second half for the fourth time this season. The Griffs also shot 60 percent or better in the second half for the sixth time in the last five seasons… Canisius scored 32 points in the paint for the fourth time this season after just three times last season… The five turnovers by Canisius were the fewest in the 11 seasons under Zeh... Freshmen Saliah Serrette and Sarah Cooley each made their Canisius debuts with both freshmen, along with fellow freshman Abby Schwenk, each registering their first collegiate points.
