Box Score The Canisius women's basketball team led for all but 14 seconds and shot better than 50 percent for the second straight game en route to a 91-75 win over Binghamton University in the Koessler Athletic Center. The 91 points scored are the most under 11th-year coach Terry Zeh as the Golden Griffins improve to 4-3 on the season, winning their fourth straight game.
All 12 Golden Griffins played and scored in the game, led by 16 points and six assists from junior Tiahana Mills. Junior Jasmine Mungo notched a career high for the second consecutive game, scoring 14 points and grabbing six rebounds in 19 minutes. Senior Kayla Hoohuli added 12 points and five assists while junior Emily Weber matched her career high with 14 points.
“Playing during finals week can be difficult and I was proud of the way we handled that game,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We wanted to go inside tonight, and I thought we did a good job of that. Building off that, our offense is finding a lot of ways to score.
“Now we have to get ready for a good Youngstown State team on Saturday night.”
Canisius scored the first five points of the game and never looked back, building a 16-3 lead just four minutes into the game. Seven Griffs scored in that opening stretch, capped by a layup from sophomore Tamara Miskovic. Canisius would lead by as many as 16 points in the half and took a 45-29 lead into the locker room on a jumper from freshman Margret Halfdanardottir in the final second.
Canisius pushed the lead to 20 points on a 3-pointer from Hoohuli four minutes into the second half. Binghamton cut the deficit to 10 points, 68-58, on one of six 3-pointers from Jasmine Sina. Canisius responded with a 9-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from sophomore Lauren D'Hont, to go up by 77-58.
Canisius led by double digits for the last 36:23 of the game.
Sina led Binghamton (1-8) with 24 points. Imani Watkins added 22 points while herae Swinson scored 18 points.
Canisius concludes its season-long four-game homestand on Saturday, against Youngstown State. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Notes: Canisius shot 50 percent or better in back-to-back games for the first time since Jan. 4 and 7, 1992, against Army and Duquesne… The previous high for points scored by a Canisius team under Zeh was 90 against Saint Peter's on Feb. 18, 2007… In the last three games, Mills has 12 assists and three turnovers… In the last five games, Canisius is shooting 49.2 percent (34-for-69) from behind the arc… Canisius made a season-high 20 free throws on 23 attempts after going 17-for-30 from the free-throw line in the two conference games last weekend… Nine Canisius players saw between 15 and 26 minutes of playing time… Canisius had 21 assists on 32 baskets… The Griffs scored a season-high 44 points in the paint, the most since Canisius scored 50 against Bucknell on Nov. 27, 2002… Canisius also scored at least 30 points in the paint for the fifth time (in seven games) this season — the most since the 2006-07 season… Canisius is on a four-game winning streak for the first time since a five-game winning streak during the 2009-10 season.
