Three Golden Griffins had double-doubles on the day with sophomore Katlyn Tyler recording 13 kills and 13 digs. “We learned this weekend what it takes to play with the top teams of our conference in the month of November,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “Marist is a veteran team and played calm in the big points of that match. We have to continue to control what we can control on our side of the net.”
Marist (21-5, 13-3 MAAC) used a 7-2 run midway through the first set to gain control. The Griffs scored five straight points later in the set to cut the deficit to 25-21, but the Red Foxes won three of the last four points to put it away.
The teams played a tight second set, that featured nine ties and four lead changes. A four-point run by the Griffs gave them a 22-20 lead. After Marist tied the score, the Griffs fought off a set point down 24-23 with a kill down the line from Tyler. Canisius fought off another set point and then used a block from Tyler and Siebert to tie the score at 25-25. A service ace from Bendy gave Canisius its first set point, and the Griffs took advantage with another block from Tyler and Siebert to even the match at one set apiece.
Marist controlled the last two sets in similar fashion. The Red Foxes pulled away by scoring three straight points to break a 13-13 tie and go up 16-13 in the third set. Canisius would respond by winning three of the next four points, capped by a service ace from Streicher. Marist came right back by scoring three straight points and putting the set away. In the fourth set, a 5-1 run by the Red Foxes gave them a 15-10 lead. Canisius wouldn't get closer than three points the rest of the way.
Mackenzie Stephens had 20 kills and eight assists for Marist. Amanda Schlegel had 55 assists for Marist while Brooke Zywick added 25 digs.
Canisius (7-18, 7-9 MAAC) wraps up the regular season with two road matches next weekend, starting at Quinnipiac on Saturday. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
