Box Score The Canisius volleyball team lost in four sets to Siena College on Saturday afternoon in the Koessler Athletic Center. The Golden Griffins fell 25-20, 19-25, 25-27, 21-25 to drop to 7-8 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Three Golden Griffins had double-digit kills, with sophomore Katlyn Tyler posting a team-high 14 kills. Junior Rachel Kline had 13 kills while sophomore Jacklyn Malusa had 12 kills. Junior Grace Streicher posted her 10th double-double of the year with 36 assists and 14 digs.
“When you look at the stat sheet, that's a pretty even match and in an even match it comes down to making plays in crucial moments. We didn't do that, especially with a number of one-touch errors at the end of the third set,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “We need to find a way to battle and make those plays when we need them. We get another chance against Marist on Sunday.”
Canisius built a 17-9 lead in the first set before Siena made a run out of its second timeout. The Saints cut the lead to 18-15, but a kill down the line from Tyler out of a Canisius timeout halted the momentum for Siena. The Saints would get within two at 21-19, but Canisius scored four of the last five points, capped by a kill from Streicher, to close out the set.
The second set featured a number of runs as Siena built a 9-3 lead before the Griffs scored six of the next seven points to build a 10-9 lead. Siena would regain control with a 9-1 spurt to go up 19-11 and go on to even the match at one set apiece.
Siena (13-14, 11-4 MAAC) carried that momentum to the third set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead. The Griffs used a 7-1 run, capped by a kill from Malusa, to knot the score at 10-10. Canisius wouldn't take its first lead until going up 22-21 on a service ace from Malusa. The Griffs had two set points at 24-22 but couldn't convert as they committed a service error and service reception error. A kill from Siebert gave Canisius another set point, but a kill from Meghann Wright knottied the score at 25-25. A Canisius attack error followed by another service reception error gave the set to Siena.
In the fourth set, Canisius used a 5-1 run to tie the score at 20-20. Siena answered right back with four straight points to take control. The teams traded sideouts, which gave the match to Siena.
Rachel Stoklosa led Siena with 16 kills while Meghann Wright had 15 kills. Haley Howell posted 49 assists for the Saints while Jacqueline Skeen had nine blocks.
