Box Score

The Canisius volleyball team won the final seven points of the first set and never looked in a sweep of Saint Peter's University on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins won 25-21, 25-12, 25-14 at the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City, N.J.

Junior Rachel Kline posted her 11th double-double of the season with 13 kills and 15 digs while hitting a season-high .444. Junior Lauren Siebert had 13 kills and a .407 attack percentage. Canisius had 10 team blocks in the win, led by seven blocks (including four solo blocks) from sophomore Jacklyn Malusa.

Senior Emily Litwin recorded 24 digs while junior Grace Streicher was credited with 34 assists.

“This was a nice team road win and we built off those good things we did against Rider. We are still working on some system changes, and I thought we improved in those areas a little bit today,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “We're looking forward to coming back to Buffalo for our final home matches of the season.”

The teams played a tight first set that featured nine ties and six lead changes. Saint Peter's (6-18, 3-11 MAAC) held a 21-18 lead in the first set before the Griffs took the set by winning the final seven points. Freshman Kristin Bendy had three kills during the run, that was capped by a block from Kline and Malusa.

Canisius built on that momentum and broke open the second set with a 9-0 run to build a 19-9 lead. Malusa had three blocks during the run while Kline posted two kills. A kill from sophomore Katlyn Tyler gave the second set to Canisius. A 5-1 run in the third set gave Canisius a 16-9 lead. Siebert would have a strong closing to the match, recording four kills on the final seven Canisius points as the Griffs wrapped up the match.

Canisius hosts Siena College on Saturday, with match time in the KAC set for 1 p.m.

Notes: Canisius defeated Saint Peter's for the ninth consecutive meeting… Canisius was 43-for-45 (95.6 percent) on service receptions and has been above 94 percent in each of the last four matches… Canisius had double-digit blocks for the seventh time and is 5-2 in those seven matches… Malusa is now averaging 1.02 blocks per set in conference play… Litwin has averaged 8.00 digs per set in each of the last three matches… Kline posted 15 or more digs for the eighth time this season… Siebert has at least three blocks in four straight matches.
