Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Canisius College Athletics

Women's Soccer Defeats Quinnipiac

Canisius women's soccer senior Maria Nelms scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute, sophomore Sabrina Fitzgerald had a goal and an assist and senior goalkeeper Brigid St. Leger made seven saves to help lift the Golden Griffins to a 2-1 win over Quinnipiac Saturday afternoon in Hamden, Conn.

With the win over Quinnipiac, the Griffs are now 2-2-0 in MAAC play and 3-10-0 overall. The loss for the Bobcats drops the team to 1-8-1 and 0-3-1 in conference play.

Fitzgerald put Canisius up 1-0 in the game's 18th minute with her second goal of the season. Quinnipiac knotted the game at 1-1 in the 31st minute on a goal from Jessica Fontaine.

Canisius played more aggressive in the second half, as the Griffs outshot the host Bobcats 5-4. Nelms broke the 1-1 tie in the 74th minute as she beat Quinnipiac goalkeeper Natalia Grodzki off a pass from Fitzgerald. The goal for Nelms was her first of the season.

“We played a very timid first half despite the goal by Sabrina," Canisius head coach Jim Wendling said. "We let Quinnipiac take control of the game and dictate the play, but we still managed to leave the half tied 1-1. In the second half we put on a much stronger performance, mixing up the play and displayed more of a direct style. This win puts us in the heart of the MAAC standings and we look forward to our match against Rider next week."

Canisius will return to action Oct. 8 when the team travels to play at Rider. Game time in Lawrenceville, N.J., is set for 4 p.m.

The game-winning goal was the first in Nelms' career... Fitzgerald leads the team with five points (two goals and an assist) this season...
