Women's Soccer Clinches MAAC Playoff Berth

The Canisius women's soccer team defeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Manhattan College (7-8-2, 2-5-2 MAAC) on Saturday afternoon, 3-0. With the victory over the Jaspers, the Golden Griffins clinched a playoff berth to the MAAC Championships.

Canisius (6-13-0, 5-5-0 MAAC) came into the game with something to play for and the Blue and Gold never stopped putting pressure on the visiting Jaspers, scoring three goals in the first 20 minutes of play.

Senior Mallory Illsley started the scoring early on for head coach Jim Wendling's team, netting the first goal of the game, and her third of the season, in the 16th minute of play on an assist by freshman Samantha Gagliano. After the goal by Illsley, the Griffs continued to put pressure on Manhattan goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny and in the 21st minute of play, Illsley fed the ball to Kathleen Lawver and the sophomore put the Blue and Gold up 2-0.

Canisius wouldn't stay up 2-0 for long, as the Griffs scored the team's third goal in the 26th minute. Sophomore Sabrina Fitzgerald scored her third goal of the season off of a feed by Lawver and freshman Rebecca Lederman. Senior Brigid St. Leger played phenomenal for the Griffs in net, recording five saves and her third shutout of the 2014 season.

The Griffs will play next on November 1st in the first round of the MAAC Championship playoffs, as the team will either be slotted in the fifth or sixth seed, depending on the rest of league play.
