The Canisius women's soccer team saw its 2014 season come to an end with a 1-0 loss to Niagara in the quarterfinal round of the 2014 MAAC Women's Soccer Championship Saturday evening in Lewiston, N.Y.
The Blue and Gold finish the season with a 6-14-0 overall record. The victory allows the No. 3 seeded Purple Eagles to advance to next weekend's MAAC Women's Soccer Championship semifinal round in West Long Branch, N.J.
Niagara scored the game's lone tally in the 34th minute when sophomore midfielder Naomi Giovino was able to beat Canisius goalkeeper Bridgid St. Leger on a direct kick from the corner. Niagara ended the game with an 11-8 advantage in shots, with Canisius producing all eight of its shots in the game's final 45 minutes. The Purple Eagles also held a 7-4 advantage in corners.
St. Leger made two stops in her final college game, while Niagara goalkeeper Claire Feiertag was also credited with two stops in the win.
This was the last game with the Griffs for seven members of this year's team, including head coach Jim Wendling. Seniors Maria Nelms, Emma Pastori, Katelynn Chamberlain, Jenny Piaggione, Mallory Illsley and St. Leger all made their last appearance in the Blue and Gold uniforms in the loss.
Game Notes: This was the 45th all-time meeting between these two Western New York rivals, with Niagara leading the series 25-18-2... This was the fourth time Canisius and Niagara met in the MAAC Women's Soccer Championship, with each team winning two times... This marks the second-straight year where the Griffs saw their season end in the MAAC Championship quarterfinals with a 1-0 loss - the 2013 also saw its season end with a 1-0 loss to Monmouth Nov. 1, 2013.
