Box Score The Canisius volleyball team completed the weekend sweep with a 25-12, 25-14, 25-19 win over Quinnipiac University in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins win for the third time in four matches and improve to 5-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Junior Lauren Siebert posted eight kills on 10 attack attempts as Canisius hit a season-high .319 in the match as a team. Junior Rachel Kline had nine kills and nine digs to go along with three service aces. Junior Grace Streicher was credited with 30 assists. Canisius had a season-high 11 service aces, led by five service aces from freshman Kristen Plukas.
“After an emotional win against Fairfield on Saturday, we talked about not wanting to come out flat, which can happen on the back end of the conference weekend,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “We continued to gain confidence in our serve and have people step up at different places on the court.”
Canisius scored the first four points of the match and never looked back in the opening set. Sophomore Jacklyn Malusa had four kills on four attack attempts as the Griffs limited Quinnipiac (2-20, 0-10 MAAC) to a .000 attack percentage.
The Griffs held the Bobcats to a .000 attack percentage for the second consecutive set. Canisius scored eight straight points, including three straight aces from Plukas, to build a 16-6 lead as Canisius cruised to go up 2-0.
The teams stayed close for a majority of the third set, which featured eight ties and five lead changes. The Griffs would take the lead for good on a block from Kline and junior Amy Osinski to go up 10-9. Canisius created separation with a 5-1 run to go up 17-12 on the fifth ace of the day from Plukas. The Bobcats used a 5-1 run to cut the Canisius lead to 18-17, but the Griffs scored the next four points to break the match open.
Canisius (5-13, 5-4 MAAC) returns to the court on Wednesday, at rival Niagara University. Match time in the Battle of the Bridge contest is set for 7 p.m. in Lewiston.
Notes: Canisius has a winning record midway through the conference schedule for the third straight year and for eighth time in the nine years of the double round-robin schedule... Canisius improved to 6-0 all-time against Quinnipiac… The 11 service aces for Canisius were the most since posting 11 against Rider on Sept. 26, 2010… The five service aces from Plukas are the most by a Golden Griffin since Jessica Warner had five against Loyola on Oct. 28, 2012… Streicher had 30 assists for a career-best fifth-straight match… Kline has 11 service aces in the last five matches… Sophomore Katlyn Tyler did not dress with a lower-body injury. She is listed as day-to-day.
