The Canisius women's soccer team hosted MAAC rival Siena this evening at the Demske Sports Complex and despite strong play from the Griffs, the team lost in overtime, 1-0.
With the loss the Golden Griffins fall to 4-12-0 this season and have a 3-4-0 record in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Siena improves to 6-5-5 overall and now has a 3-1-3 conference record.
The game was evenly matched throughout the first 90 minutes as the Griffs and Saints each recorded 11 shots on goal and the Blue and Gold had five saves to the Saints' three. But despite the even play, Siena would score on a game-winning bicycle kick by Cassy Landis in the 90th minutes of play.
Canisius was led offensively by seniors Maria Nelms and Mallory Illsley and sophomore Kathleen Lawver who each recorded two shots apiece. Brigid St. Leger, despite her five saves, received the loss, dropping her to 4-6-0 this season.
Game Notes: This was the first overtime loss for the Griffs since the Blue and Gold fell to Marist, 1-0, on Wed. Oct, 9 last season…. With the loss the Golden Griffins are now 9-17-1 all-time against Siena… Siena is now unbeaten in it's last five games against Canisius, with the streak beginning with a 1-0 overtime victory in the 2010 MAAC Championship….
