Fairfield's Ashley Small scored twice and goalkeeper Kathleen Early made three stops in 83-plus minutes of play as the host Stags defeated Canisius 3-0 in MAAC women's soccer action Saturday in Fairfield, Conn. The loss, Canisius' second-straight in league play, moved the Golden Griffins to 4-13-0 overall and 3-5-0 in MAAC play, while Fairfield improved to 12-3-1 overall and 6-1-0 in conference games.
The Stags opened up the scoring in the eighth minute of play after Torey Camporini scored off an assist from teammate Anna Borea. The home team didn't stay out of the net long, as Small made the score 2-0 in the 18th minute with her first marker of the day. Small capped the scoring in the 77th minute as she beat the Griffs' defense for her second goal of the day, and her seventh goal of the season.
Canisius senior Brigid St. Leger made the start in goal for the Blue and Gold and took the loss while recording three saves in 45 minutes of play. Junior Kailee De Franks came in for relief for St. Leger out of the halftime break and ended up recording two saves.
Fairfield, the top-ranked team in the MAAC, outshot Canisius by a 28-6 margin and ended the game holding a 4-1 advantage in corners. Early stopped all three shots she faced in Fairfield's goal before making way for Jenna Pike, who played the final 6:44 of the contest and did not face a shot from the Griffs.
Canisius will play at Marist on Wednesday, Oct. 22. Game time is set for 1 p.m., in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Game Notes: This was the 25th all-time meeting between these two programs in women's soccer, with Fairfield leading the series 20-4-1… Junior Tara McPherson made her 17th start of the season - she is the only Griff to start every game this year… This was the fourth time this year Canisius has played two goalkeepers in a game.
