Volleyball Falls In Four At Manhattan

Box Score

The Canisius volleyball team lost in four sets (20-25, 22-25, 25-21, 20-25) to Manhattan College in the Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon.

Junior Rachel Kline had her team-high seventh double-double of the season with 16 kills and 16 digs while sophomore Jacklyn Malusa had a season-high 13 kills to go along with a .500 attack percentage. Senior Emily Litwin posted her second straight match with 30 digs while junior Grace Streicher recorded 38 assists.

“Like a lot of teams, we have to deal with an injury to a starter and when that happens, we need the players comfortable in their roles to execute at the level of expectation,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel. “We didn't get enough of that execution today and couldn't come up with another road win.”

Canisius jumped out to a quick 6-3 lead but Manhattan scored nine straight points to gain control en route to taking the first set. In the second set, Canisius led 12-8 before a 5-1 run by Manhattan knotted the score at 13-13. The Jaspers extended that run by scoring six of the next seven points and went up 2-0 in the match.

The Griffs trailed 20-18 in the third set before closing the set on a 7-1 run to force a fourth set. Kline started the run with back-to-back kills and closed out the set with consecutive service aces. Manhattan (12-8, 5-3 MAAC) scored four straight points in the fourth set to go up 21-15 and went on to closing out the match.

Malia McGuinness had 24 kills and 23 digs while Claire Van Dyk posted 11 kills and 12 digs. Jade Gray recorded 54 assists.

Canisius (3-13, 3-4 MAAC) plays four of its next five matches at home, starting with Saturday's match against Fairfield. Match time in the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 1 p.m.

Notes: Malusa had double-digit kills for the first time since recording 12 against Montana State on Sept. 5… Litwin had 30 digs in back-to-back matches for the first time in her career… Kline is the first Canisius player with three straight double-doubles since Renee Lettow (Nov. 7-14, 2007).
