Women's Soccer Blanks Iona at Home

The Canisius women's soccer team picked up its third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory of the season, as the Golden Griffins defeated visiting Iona 1-0 Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

With the victory, the Griffs move to 3-3-0 in MAAC play and 4-11-0 overall. The Gaels drop to 1-3-2 in league action and 5-8-2.

Senior Mallory Illsley scored the game's only goal, her second of the season, in the 32nd minute of play, off of a throw-in assist from sophomore teammate Callie Good. Senior goalkeeper Brigid St. Leger got the start in net for the Blue and Gold and she recorded six saves enroute to her second shutout of the season. Iona goalkeeper Lauren Ferris started for the Gaels and made three stops in 78:19 of action before she was lifted for teammate Morgan McBrier.

Iona ended the game with a 13-10 advantage in shots and the Gaels held a 7-3 advantage in corners.

“We talked a lot about our energy level for a full game yesterday at practice and again in pregame,” Canisius head coach Jim Wendling said. “I thought we got a better effort, but our girls know they can still give more. Mallory made a nice play to score that goal and Brigid did a good job in goal and got some good help from our backline.”

Canisius will return to action Oct. 15, when the Griffs play host to Siena. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 4 p.m.

The 1-0 shutout win stands as St. Leger's first career shutout against a MAAC opponent and it is her second shutout this year….
