Volleyball Rallies To Defeat Bucknell In Five

Box Score

The Canisius volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat the host Bucknell Bison in five sets on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins won 22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-12 and took both of their matches at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa.

Sophomore middle hitter Lauren Siebert recorded a career-high 19 kills (including five kills on five swings in the fifth set) to go along with five blocks while senior middle hitter Roxanne Hernandez had eight kills and nine blocks. Siebert and Hernandez each hit .500 in the match with Canisius posting a season-high 14 blocks on the day.

"I am proud of the way our team didn't give up today and battled back, not only to force a fifth set but when we got down in the fifth set," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We definitely used and showed our team depth today, and a number of different players came through at key portions of this match."

Senior Sydney Palka and sophomore Grace Streicher combined for 62 assists as each setter also posted eight digs. Freshman Jacklyn Malusa had her second double-double of the weekend with 13 kills and 15 digs.

Canisius jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead, but Bucknell (5-3) scored the next five points to claim the lead. The Griffs regained the lead at 10-9, but could never extend the lead as the Bison pulled away late to take the first set. Bucknell broke open the second set with a 7-1 run to go up 15-9, and the Bison never let the Griffs get closer than two points the rest of the way en route to going up 2-0 in the match.

The Griffs again built an early 5-1 lead, but Bucknell battled back in the third set. The Bison evened the score at 13-13, before Canisius reclaimed control by winning the next four points. The Bison answered back by taking the next four points and knotting the score again. Canisius took the next three points to go up 20-17, but Bucknell tied the score at 22-22. After trading side-outs, a block from Hernandez followed by a Bucknell attack error gave the Griffs the fourth set.

Canisius never trailed in the fourth set, building a 13-8 lead and extended the advantage to as many as seven points on multiple occasions. The Bison fought off the first four six points before the Griffs used a kill from Seibert to force the fifth set. Siebert and senior Emily Elek each had four kills in the fourth set.

In the fifth set, Canisius had its best hitting set of the day, and of the season, as the Griffs posted a .409 attack percentage to complete the comeback. The Griffs won the first two points but Bucknell took seven of the eight next points to go up 7-3 and force Canisius to use both of its timeouts. Canisius would win 11 of the final 15 points of the match, including a four-point run on the serve of junior Olivia Chrzanowski, as the Griffs won the match on a Bucknell attack error.

Canisius (2-8) returns to the Koessler Athletic Center to host the University at Buffalo on Tuesday night for its final non-conference match of the regular season. Match time between the cross-town rivals is set for 6 p.m.

Notes: Elek was named the Bucknell Invitational MVP while Siebert was also named to the All-Tournmaent Team... Canisius overcame a 2-0 deficit for the first time since Oct. 13, 2012, when the Griffs defeated Fairfield in five sets in the KAC… The nine blocks by Hernandez were the most by a Golden Griffin since Samantha Good had 10 blocks against Manhattan on Sept. 30, 2012... The 19 kills from Siebert best her previous career high of 14 kills set against Loyola on Oct. 28, 2012… Canisius had double-digit blocks for the third time this season.
