The
Canisius women's basketball team limited Loyola University to six points over
the final nine and a half minutes and went 9-for-10 in the final 90 seconds to
defeat the Greyhounds 48-39 in the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday
afternoon in a Play 4Kay game. The Golden Griffins complete the season sweep of
Loyola, snapping a four-game losing streak to improve to 9-14 overall and 6-6
in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Junior
Jamie Ruttle recorded the third
double-double of her career, posting 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Ashley Durham had 11 points and matched
her career high with eight rebounds. Junior Jen Lennox had seven points and four blocks in 13 minutes off the
bench.
"A
lot of times to end a losing streak, it takes an ugly win and that's exactly
what today's game was," Canisius coach Terry
Zeh said. "We struggled with Loyola's zone in the first half because it was
so spread out, but I felt our adjustments allowed our offense to get better
post touches, which we were able to take advantage of."
Neither
team could get its offense going in the first half, with each team making eight
field goals and combining for 25 turnovers. A layup from Ruttle put Canisius up
12-8 with 7:38 left in the half, but two baskets from Loyola on their next two
possessions tied the score. The Griffs held the Greyhounds scoreless for almost
four minutes, going up 17-12 after a 3-pointer from junior Jen Morabito and a layup from sophomore Kayla Hoohuli.
Canisius
led 19-16 at the half, and the teams combined for 24 points in the first six
minutes of the second half. A 3-pointer from Hoohuli quickly extended the
Canisius lead to 22-16, but Loyola eventually tied the score at 24-24 after a
3-pointer from Katie Sheahin. The Greyhounds took the first lead of the day
after Alyssa Sutherland completed a three-point play to put Loyola up 27-26.
The
Griffs trailed 29-28 but would score eight straight points, holding Loyola
scoreless for more than four and a half minutes, to build a 36-29 lead. Morabito
drained a 3-pointer and Lennox had five points, including a three-point play,
to give Canisius the seven-point advantage. Loyola cut the deficit to 36-33,
but would only score two points for the next eight and a half minutes, which
included back-to-back blocks from Lennox. The Griffs went 9-for-10 from the
free-throw line in the final 1:34 to put the game away.
Sheahin
led Loyola (9-13, 4-8 MAAC) with 13 points but went 6-for-23 from the floor.
Tiffany Padgett recorded eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Sutherland added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Canisius
heads to the East Coast for two games next week, starting with Thursday's game
at Fairfield University. Tipoff in the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport,
Conn. for the ESPN3 game is set for 6 p.m.
