Volleyball Opens MAAC Play With Win At Marist

The Canisius College volleyball team opened its MAAC schedule with a four-set win at Marist College on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins won 25-23, 25-14, 22-25, 25-19 to improve to 4-7 on the season and start conference play with a win for the fifth time in the last six seasons.

Junior Jessica Warner had a career-high 19 kills as the Canisius outside hitters had 41 of the team's 55 kills on the day. Junior Emily Elek had 13 kills and 15 digs for her first double-double of the season. Senior Samantha Good had 11 kills and a .500 attack percentage. Three Golden Griffins had double-digit digs, with senior Allyson Severyn recording a team-high 17 digs.

"This is the style of volleyball we have been focusing on playing consistently, and today it resulted in a good road win," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We had 11 people contribute at some point in this match, and we are going to need and use that depth throughout this season."

Canisius built a 19-15 lead before Marist tied the set at 22-22. The Griffs then got a block from Elek and junior Roxanne Hernandez and a service ace from Severyn to earn two set points. After a Marist side-out made it 24-23, a kill from senior Logan Sulongga gave Canisius the first set. The Griffs used a seven-point run midway through the second set to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Good posted three kills during the run on Elek's serve, as Canisius closed out the set on a kill from Elek.

Marist (4-7) won the third set, holding off a late Canisius run to force a fourth set. Canisius broke open the fourth set with a five-point spurt, turning a one-point lead into a 18-12 advantage. Marist would never get closer than four points the rest of the way as Elek closed out the match.

Hanna Stoiberg posted a triple-double with 13 kills, 20 assists and 11 digs. Mackenzie Stephens had 11 kills while Courtney Shaw recorded a match-high five blocks.

Canisius concludes its conference-opening road trip at Siena on Sunday, with match time in Loudonville set for 2 p.m.
