Defense Keys No. 12 Ohio State Victory over Griffs

The Canisius College women's lacrosse team battled nationally-ranked Ohio State to the end on Sunday afternoon but the No. 12 Buckeyes held the Griffs without a goal for 32:51 to hold on for a 14-11 victory at the Demske Sports Complex. Canisius is now 2-5 on the season, while Ohio State improves to 6-1.

"We played hard for 60 minutes today but fell just a little short in the end," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "If we learn to play at that level for the remainder of the season, good things will happen. We got off to a great start but it was a game of swings and they finished stronger. We got within two with less than five minutes remaining and we just have to figure out a way to pull it out in the end."

Senior midfielder Megan Oosting led the Griffs against their ranked foe, matching a career-high with five goals and adding eight draw controls, one shy of her own school record.

Senior Carly Quinn recorded four points, netting one goal and registering three assists. Junior Lindsey Morgan added two tallies on the afternoon, while senior Theresa Walton, sophomore Maria Kotas and freshman Whitley Perry rounded out the scoring for Canisius with a goal each. Kotas also added a game-high three caused turnovers to anchor the Griff defense.

Canisius started the game strong, racing out to a 4-1 lead in just over seven minutes of action. Oosting netted two of the team's tallies with Quinn recording a goal and an assist during the early action.

Ohio State responded with three goals in 2:25 to pull even at four, but a 4-1 Canisius run gave the Griffs their largest lead of the game, 8-5. Morgan started the stretch with a free-position tally with 18:13 remaining in the half and was followed by a Perry goal off a feed from Quinn. After a Buckeye score, Morgan and Oosting both netted tallies for the three-goal lead with 13:51 remaining in the opening period.

Ohio State, however, would buckle down on the defensive end and slowly build a lead. The Buckeyes netted the last four goals of the first half in the final 13-plus minutes to head into intermission with a 9-8 lead. Ohio State then scored the first three tallies of the second period to grab a 12-8 advantage with 14:30 remaining in the game. Overall, Ohio State scored seven goals, while keeping the Griffs without a tally during the 32:51 stretch.

Canisius finally ended the drought when Oosting netted her fourth goal of the game with 11 minutes remaining in the contest. The Buckeyes reclaimed their four-goal but Walton and Oosting both tallied free-position goals to pull the Griffs within two, 13-11, with 6:12 left in regulation.

Walton won the ensuing draw control for Canisius and the Griffs fired three shots in the following possession but couldn't convert on their chances. Ohio State's Tori DeScenza recorded two saves during the stretch to seal the victory for the Buckeyes, who added a late goal on the offensive end with the Canisius goaltender out of the crease. DeScenza finished the game with 10 saves for Ohio State to earn the victory, including nine stops in the second half on 12 shots on goal by the Griffs.

The Griffs finished the game with a 29-22 advantage in shots on the afternoon plus a 14-13 edge in draw controls. Alayna Markwordt recorded nine points on three goals and six assists to lead the Ohio State offense with both Gabby Capuzzi and Jackie Cifarelli netting five goals.

Canisius returns to action on Wednesday, hosting St. Bonaventure. First draw at the Demske Sports Complex is scheduled for 4 p.m.
