Siena
College used a 14-0 run early in the game and never relinquished the lead to
defeat the Canisius College women's basketball team 69-57 in the Koessler
Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins finish the regular
season 12-17 overall and 6-12 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Junior
Ashley Wilkes scored a team-high 18
points while sophomore Jamie Ruttle
had her second career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Brooke Angelos had a career-high seven
assists in 30 minutes.
"We
didn't come out ready to play at the start of either half today, as Siena
showed a lot of energy," Canisius coach Terry
Zeh said. "Those shots that Siena made late in the shot clock feel worse
when you're trying to dig out of a hole. We continue to put ourselves in that tough position of battling back from early deficits.
After
a 3-pointer from freshman Kayla Hoohuli in
the first minute of the game, Siena (11-16, 9-9 MAAC) scored 14 straight points
to build a 14-3 lead. The Griffs battled back into the game, cutting it to 24-21
on a jumper from Wilkes. Siena drained a number of shots late in the shot
clock, including a jumper Lily Grenci and 3-pointer from Cristina Centeno in the final two minutes of the half and took a 34-28 lead into the locker room.
The
Griffs cut the Siena lead to 42-37 after a layup from Durham but another
3-pointer from Centeno as the shot clock expired pushed the lead back to eight
for the Saints. The Griffs used two free throws from sophomore Courtney VandeBovenkamp and junior Ashley Durham to make it 45-41 with
just over 10 minutes left, but that would be as close as the Griffs got the
rest of the way. Siena made 18 free throws in those final 10 minutes to put the
game away.
Centeno
led Siena with 21 points and five assists. Grenci had 14 points and seven
rebounds wile Clara Sole Anglada had 10 points and seven rebounds. The Saints
shot 45.5 percent in the game (50 percent in the first half) and 50 percent
(8-for-16) on 3-pointers.
Canisius
will be the No. 8 seed in next week's MAAC Championship to be held next week at
the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. The Golden Griffins will face No. 9
seed Saint Peter's in the first round with tipoff set for 2 p.m.
