Men's Soccer Canisius College Athletics

Falconer Earns All-MAAC First Team Honors

Senior Gavin Falconer of the Canisius College men's soccer team was named to the All-MAAC First Team on Wednesday. In addition, freshman Alex De Carolis collected all-rookie team accolades from the conference.

Falconer, an attacking midfielder, is the first Griff to earn first-team all-conference honors since Alan McGreal in 2009. A two-time MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, he led Canisius with 26 points, 10 goals and six assists during his senior campaign. He ranks fifth in the program's record book with his 10 goals this season, while his 26 points place seventh and his six assists are ninth.

A native of Waterford, Ireland, Falconer finished the campaign third in the MAAC in points, goals and assists. He also ranks 28th nationally with his 26 points and 33rd with his 10 goals.

A defender, De Carolis totaled seven points, three goals and one assist in 17 games as a rookie, leading all Canisius freshmen in scoring. He also helped anchor four shutouts on the year, one shy of the school record. De Carolis is the first Griff to earn MAAC All-Rookie honors since Adam Miller and Kyle Westerholt following the 2008 season.

In addition, nine Griffs were honored for their work off the field and were selected to the MAAC All-Academic Team. Falconer was joined on the squad by seniors Ian Buzzio, Paul Klopfer, Jared Ott and Regan Steele, juniors Ryan Arvin and Zack Schwartz and sophomores A.C. LaFlore and Ryan Schroen.

Canisius completed one of its most successful seasons in school history during the 2012 campaign. The Griffs received votes in the national rankings for the first time in the program's history and reached as high as second in the NSCAA North Atlantic Poll. In addition, Canisius finished the campaign with eight wins (tied for the most in school history against Division I competition) and over .500 for the first time since 1987.
