The
Canisius College volleyball team lost in three sets to Siena College in the
Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The Saints defeated the Golden
Griffins 25-19, 25-19, 25-18 as Canisius falls to 11-10 overall and 8-3 in the
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
"Siena came in with a great game plan and
executed it really well. They focused on a couple of our players and forced some of our
other players to make plays," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "A number of players on our team played their worst match of the season today, and it definitely showed.
"We are going to continue to play in
high-pressure matches the rest of the season, and we need to make adjustments
and raise our game or we will keep struggling in these situations."
Canisius
scored the first four points of the match and held a 6-1 lead as junior Emily Elek had two kills in the early
going. Siena chipped away at the Canisius lead, tying the match at 14-14 and taking
its first lead of the match at 16-15 after a Canisius attack error. The Griffs
would never regain the lead in the first set as Siena won five of the final six
points.
The
Griffs held a 10-6 lead in the second set after a service ace from sophomore Emily Litwin. Siena would then win
eight straight points, including four kills during the spurt from Rachel Stoklosa, to build a
14-10 lead. Canisius battled back, getting within one at 17-16 after a block
from senior Samantha Good and junior
Sydney Palka. The Saints wouldn't
let Canisius tie the match and went on to win the set. Siena jumped out to
a 13-2 lead and was never seriously challenged in the third set.
Three
Siena players posted 11 kills on the day with Colleen Ahearn also recording a
.476 attack percentage. Taylor Akana had 11 kills and 10 digs while Stokolsa
also had 11 kills. Sarah Sivertson recorded 42 assists and Lesli Akeo had 20
digs.
Canisius

p.m. The teams will be participating in the Dig Pink campaign and ask all fans
to wear pink to the match.
