Balanced Scoring Leads Griffs Past Rider

Getting 10 3-pointers in the game and five players in double figures, the Canisius College women's basketball team hung on for a 60-54 win over Rider University on Hall of Fame Day in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins, who have won seven of their last eight home games, improve to 10-11 overall and 4-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Freshman Kayla Hoohuli and junior Ashley Wilkes each had a team-high 13 points, with Hoohuli going 4-for-8 on 3-pointers. Sophomores Courtney VandeBovenkamp and Jen Morabito each had 11 points, with Morabito making 3-of-6 3-pointers and VandeBovenkamp converting all six of her free-throw attempts. Junior Ashley Durham had 10 points and matched her career high with nine assists.

"I have always felt that balanced scoring makes a team harder to defend. Teams are really locking down on Ruttle, and we have needed to find other ways to score," Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. "We were able to find shots for a bunch of other players, and they came through."

Hoohuli drained her first three 3-point attempts of the game, which came in the opening four and a half minutes as the Griffs built a 16-9 lead. The Broncs held Canisius without a field goal for the final 7:21 and tied the game at 21-21 on a jumper in the left corner from Emily Fazzini. Two free throws from VandeBovenkamp gave the Griffs a two-point halftime lead.

After Rider (10-11, 2-8 MAAC) scored the first six points of the second half to take a 27-23 lead, a basket from Wilkes ended a Canisius field goal drought of exactly 11 minutes. That basket from Wilkes ignited a 10-0 Canisius run, capped by a 3-pointer from the wing from Durham, to give Canisius a 33-29 lead.

Canisius had a 39-37 advantage before using an eight-point burst to build a double-digit lead. It started with a fast-break layup from sophomore Jamie Ruttle off a length-of-the-court pass from Durham and included an up-and-under post move from Morabito. The Broncs then scored nine straight, with a layup from MyNeshia McKenzie trimming the Canisius lead to 47-46. The Griffs came down and Hoohuli drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key to push the lead to four. After another basket from McKenzie, Durham drove to the hole and gave Canisius another four-point lead with a layup.  Rider came right back and a layup from Caitlin Bopp cut the Canisius lead to 52-50 with 1:04 remaining.

Morbaito nailed a 3-pointer, but Rider came right back with a basket from Fazzini. After two free throws from Durham, Bopp scored again to make it 57-54. The Broncs would force a turnover on the inbounds pass, but Canisius forced a turnover on the next Rider possession. VandeBovenkamp then put the game away with two FTs.

McKenzie led Rider with 16 points and nine rebounds. Fazzini scored nine points on 4-for-15 shooting. Rider shot 35.5 percent from the floor and 19 percent from behind the arc.

Canisius begins a four-game road stretch on Thursday, when the Golden Griffins face Loyola University. Game time at the Reitz Arena in Baltimore is set for 7 p.m.
