Hockey Rallies Past Sacred Heart

The Canisius College hockey team scored three goals in a 172-second span to rally from a 3-1 deficit with less than seven minutes remaining, earning a 4-3 victory against visiting Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Griffs improve to 8-13-3 and 8-7-2 in Atlantic Hockey play.

"The last seven or eight minutes, we decided to play team hockey and selfless hockey and we were rewarded for it," said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "A couple of players had the talent to burry goals for us late and get us this win. I'm proud of the fight in our players to get two huge points in a tight conference battle."

Sophomore Taylor Law led the rally with two goals, while sophomore Patrick Sullivan and freshman Doug Beck both added tallies.

Sophomore netminder Tony Capobianco stopped 29 shots to help the Griffs complete a sweep of the Pioneers.

After a scoreless first period, both teams struck with a goal in the second frame. Canisius netted the contest's first goal 2:26 into the period when Beck tallied his third score of the season. Sophomore Ryan Bohrer brought the puck into the Sacred Heart zone before passing to sophomore Duncan McKellar. The defender then found Beck open in the slot and the rookie beat the Sacred Heart goaltender high for his third goal of the season and the 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers (1-22-1, 0-16-1 Atlantic Hockey) pulled even with 2:25 remaining in the second. Drew George got behind the Canisius defense and then fed Brian Sheehan, who finished his attempt as the teams headed into the second intermission deadlocked at one.

Sacred Heart gained a two-goal advantage thanks to two power-play tallies in the first 10 minutes of the third period. George netted the first extra-man score just 22 seconds into the frame and Tommy Castonguay gave the Pioneers a 3-1 advantage with 10:05 remaining in regulation.

Facing a two-goal deficit, Law led the Griffs' charge toward the two points. Law one-timed a shot into the back of the net from close range off a pass from sophomore Kyle Gibbons to pull Canisius within one with 6:30 left in regulation. Freshman Doug Jessey also registered an assist on Law's eighth goal of the season.

Just 76 seconds later, Law added his second goal of the night to square the game at three. On a rush, Gibbons centered the puck and Law knocked it in from right in front of the goal for his team-leading ninth tally of the season. Jessey added his second assist of the night on the game-tying score.

Sullivan then gave the Griffs the lead 96 seconds following Law's game-tying goal. From behind the net, McKellar found Sullivan open in the right face-off circle and the sophomore buried his shot for the 4-3 lead with 3:38 left in regulation. Senior Scott Moser added an assist on the game-winning tally - Sullivan's fourth goal of the season.

The momentum carried over for the Griffs to the defensive end as Canisius and Capobianco shut the door to seal the one-goal victory.

Sacred Heart held a 32-28 advantage in shots, while going 2-for-5 on the power play. Canisius did not covert in three extra-man opportunities.

Steven Legatto recorded 24 saves for the Pioneers in the losing effort.

Canisius wraps up its six-game homestand next weekend with a pair of contests against Air Force. The schools are set to begin the series on Sunday at the Buffalo State Sports Arena with game time slated for 4:05 p.m.

Game Notes: Law netted two goals in a game for the third time in his career and the second time this season ... Jessey and McKellar both registered their first career multi-point games with their two assists ... McKellar has recorded five assists in his last five games after posting just one helper in his first 20 career contests ... Canisius last rallied from a two-goal third-period deficit against Holy Cross on March 12, 2011 ... The Griffs won back-to-back games against Sacred Heart for the first time since the 2003-04 season ... It also marks the first weekend sweep for Canisius against the Pioneers since taking four points on Feb. 19 and 20, 1999.
