Volleyball Takes Down UB To Snap Losing Streak

The Canisius College volleyball team ended an eight-match losing streak with a four-set win over the University at Buffalo on Tuesday night, in the Koessler Athletic Center. The Golden Griffins won 25-22, 19-25, 26-24, 26-24 to improve to 5-9 on the season.

Freshman Olivia Chrzanowski led Canisius with a career-high 16 kills while senior Danielle Brawn had 15 kills and nine digs. Junior Samantha Good had eight kills and five blocks. Senior Janelle Davis had 45 assists and five blocks while senior Layne Adams recorded four blocks.

"After a slow start, battling back to win that first set was big for our confidence. Then we found ways to win two close sets late in the match," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "A win over Buffalo means a little bit more, but to get any win at this point really helps our confidence and provides our team with a positive result."

Buffalo held an 18-13 lead in the first set before Canisius won five straight points to tie the match at 18-18. The Griffs extended the 5-0 run to 8-1 after a kill from Chrzanowski, block assists from Good and sophomore Emily Elek and Buffalo error to go up 21-19. The Griffs closed out the set on their second set point with a kill from Chrzanowski.

After Buffalo evened the match at one set apiece, the teams played two close sets, with Canisius coming out on top in each of them. The Griffs got back-to-back kills from Chrzanowski to take a 21-19 lead, but Buffalo would tie the match at 23-23. After a block from Good and Davis, Buffalo responded with a block of its own to tie the match at 24-24. The Griffs then got a kill from Good and kill from Elek to win the third set.

Canisius trailed 19-16 in the fourth set before winning three straight points to tie the match at 19-19. Canisius set itself up for two match points after a kill from Good put Canisius up 24-22. Buffalo fought off those match points to even the score at 24-24, but kills from Good and Chrzanowski closed out the set and the match.

Liz Scott led Buffalo (8-8) with 12 kills while Abby Niekamp had 10 kills for the Bulls. Dane Reinert had 40 assists while Kelly Svoboda recorded 17 digs.
