The
Canisius College volleyball team couldn't complete a fifth-set rally as Kent
State University defeated the Golden Griffins 19-25, 32-34, 25-16, 25-17, 20-18
in the Koessler Athletic Center on Tuesday night. With the loss, Canisius falls
to 4-6 on the season.
Senior
Danielle Brawn led the Griffs with
16 kills while junior Samantha Good
had 15 kills with both Brawn and Good recording three blocks in the match.
Sophomores Emily Elek and Jessica Warner each had 12 kills with
Elek adding nine digs and Warner hitting .435. Senior Janelle Davis had 49 assists while junior Allyson Severyn recorded 24 digs.
"We
played well in the first set and really battled to win the second set, but I
felt we had a little bit of a letdown coming out of the locker room for the
third set," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said.
"The past few weeks have been good preparation for our team for conference play
as we're going to be tested this weekend."
Canisius
pulled away late in the first set, winning five straight points to turn a 19-18
lead into a six-point advantage. Good had two kills during the run while Brawn
had a service ace. A kill from Elek closed out the set.
The
Griffs rallied from an 18-12 deficit and staved off nine set points in the
second set. Down 24-20, the Griffs used two kills from Brawn as well as a block
from senior Layne Adams and Warner
to tie the match at 24-24. The Griffs finally took the lead on a service ace
from Davis to go up 30-29. Canisius would eventually win the set on its fourth
set point, taking advantage of a Kent State error.
The
Golden Flashes easily won the next two sets, taking early leads to tie the
match at two sets apiece. The Griffs would rally again late in the fifth set,
down 14-12 and used a Kent State service error and kill from Davis to tie the match
at 14-14. Canisius fought off six match points, but Kent State closed out the
match on the seventh one.
Maigan
Larsen led Kent State with 19 kills while Aleksandra Nowak had 59 assists.
Canisius opens conference play this
weekend, starting at Fairfield on Saturday. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
