The
Canisius College volleyball team lost both of its matches at the Best Western
Falcon Plaza Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins lost
25-13, 25-18, 25-23 to Michigan State University and then lost 25-9, 25-18, 25-22
to the host Bowling Green Falcons. With the two losses, Canisius drops to 4-5
on the season.
"We made some individual progress this weekend, but that's hard to see with the results we had," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "Those were three good teams we played and when we made one mistake, our opponent really capitalized and went on a run. We need to learn from these experiences and let them help us, especially against the top teams in our conference."
Michigan State 3, Canisius 0
The
Spartans scored eight of the first 10 points in the opening set en route to
easily taking the first set from the Golden Griffins. Michigan State pulled
away in the second set when the score was tied at 7-7. The Spartans won nine of
the next 11 points to take control and eventually take a 2-0 lead in the set.
Canisius
built a three-point lead midway through the third set as the Griffs won three
straight points after the match was tied at 12-12. The run included a kill from
junior Samantha Good, a service ace
from freshman Olivia Chrzanowski and
block from Good and senior Janelle Davis.
The Spartans then won seven of the next eight points to take a 19-16 lead as
the Griffs couldn't get any closer the rest of the match.
Good,
Chrzanowski and senior Danielle Brawn
led the Griffs with six kills apiece. Davis had 16 assists, four kills (on
seven attempts) and two blocks.
Bowling Green 3, Canisius 0
After
Bowling Green easily won the first set, the teams played a close second set as
Canisius went up 13-10 after kills from sophomore Emily Elek and Brawn. The Falcons worked their way back into the
lead, using a five-point run to go up 18-15 and closed out the set by winning 15
of the final 23 points. Canisius jumped out to a 7-5 lead in the third set, but
three straight points from Bowling Green gave the Falcons a lead they would
never relinquish.
Good, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, and senior Layne Adams led the
Griffs with seven kills apiece. Davis had 22 assists while Severyn had 14 digs
and Chrzanowski had eight digs.
Canisius
plays its first home match of the 2011 season on Tuesday night, when the Golden
Griffins host Kent State University. Match time in the Koessler Athletic Center
is set for 7 p.m.
Notes: Canisius
played Bowling Green and Michigan State for the first time in program history...
The match against Michigan State was the first in program history against a
program from the Big Ten conference... Bowling Green is the second of four
Mid-American Conference opponents for the Griffs this season... Brawn's streak of
consecutive matches with double-digit kills ended against the Spartans. She
entered the match with a stretch of nine straight of 10 kills or more.
