Scoring
two runs in three separate innings, the Canisius College softball team defeated
the University at Buffalo 6-2 at the Demske Sports Complex on Tuesday
afternoon. With the win, the Golden Griffins snap a four-game losing streak and
improve to 16-17 on the season.
Senior
Paige Freiberger reached base in
three of her four plate appearances, going 2-for-3 with a double, home run and
four RBI. Senior Emily Helbig went
2-for-4 while junior Lauren Falzone
scored two runs out of the No. 9 spot in the order for the Griffs.
Buffalo
took the 1-0 lead in the second as Tori Pettine led off with a single and then
Andi Saucier dropped down a bunt. Saucier beat out the bunt single, and Pettine
raced all the way to third on the play with Saucier taking second on the throw
to third. After Amanda Baun got a
strikeout for the first out of the inning, Alex Bejarano attempted a squeeze
bunt. Bejarano missed on the attempt and the runners tried to get back to the
base, but an errant throw allowed Pettine to score. Baun would strike out the
next two batters to end the Buffalo rally.
Canisius
came back with two runs in the bottom of the second as junior Katie Lancellotti drew a one-out walk
and stole second. Falzone beat out an infield single, and Lancellotti scored
all the way from second base on the play to tie the game at 1-1. Falzone would steal
second and score on a single from senior Lauren
Hope to give Canisius the 2-1 lead.
After
Buffalo tied the game at 2-2 in the third, Falzone led off the fourth with a
walk and Lauryn Chris beat out a
single to short to put runners at first and second. Junior Lizzy Gatto laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and
third with two outs. Freiberger followed with a double over the centerfielder's
head to score Falzone and Chris and give Canisius the 4-2 lead.
The
Griffs doubled their lead in the sixth as Gatto reached on a one-out infield
single. Freiberger then hit a home run to right, her third homer of the year, to
put Canisius ahead 6-2.
