Softball Drops a Pair to End Spring Break

The Canisius College softball team ended its Spring Break trip to California with a pair of losses on Saturday in a split non-conference doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton's Anderson Field in Fullerton, Calif. The Golden Griffins lost the first game by a score of 4-0 to Ohio before falling to the host Cal State Fullerton Titans by a score of 6-4. The Griffs are now 10-10 on the season.

Canisius snapped a string of 31-straight innings without a run in the top half of the third in the game against Fullerton when the Blue and Gold posted a four-run frame to take an early 4-0 lead. Senior Paige Freiberger reached base safely on an infield-single with one out that allowed teammate Lauren Falzone to score from third. The Blue and Gold would add three more runs in the frame on an RBI-single by junior Katie Lancellotti and a two-run homer to left centerfield by junior Lizzy Gatto.

Fullerton (10-14) answered with five runs in the home half of the third, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of senior Torrie Anderson. Fullerton sophomore Ashley Carter sealed the scoring for the Titans with an RBI-single in the fourth off losing pitcher Amanda Baun. Baun allowed Fullerton's six runs of five hits while walking four and striking out one. The Griffs pounded out nine hits in the loss, with Gatto going 2-for-3 with the two-run homer and a run scored. Senior Lauren Hope had two hits for the Griffs, as did Freiberger, who also added an RBI.

In the first game, the Ohio Bobcats (11-12) scored three times in the first and then added two runs in the third en route to the 6-0 victory. Canisius had four hits in the loss to Ohio, with Gatto and Falzone each picking up a base hit in the loss. Junior Lauryn Chris and sophomore Katie Medina also had hits for Canisius.

The Griffs are scheduled to open the home portion of 2011 slate on Tuesday, March 29, when the team hosts Buffalo at the Demske Sports Complex. First pitch for the single-game is set for 2 p.m.
