Loyola Marymount Too Much for Softball

Loyola Marymount racked up 14 runs on 12 hits and starting pitcher Dana Waldusky tossed a complete-game one-hitter as the host Lions defeated Canisius College 14-0 in five innings at Smith Field in Los Angeles Wednesday afternoon. Loyola Marymount moved to 13-16 with the win, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 10-6 with the loss.

Sophomore Stephanie Pfentner had Canisius' lone hit on the day, to extend her hitting streak to eight-straight games, which is the longest hitting streak for any Griff this season. She was one of three Canisius base runners to reach safely in the loss.

After playing 2.5 scoreless innings, the Lions broke the game open with four runs in the home half of the third, with the first two runs coming off a two-run homer by shortstop Sam Fischer. Kelly Sarginson follwed Fischer's homer by drawing a walk, which led to another two-run home run in the frame, this time off the bat of catcher Olivia Alvarez. In all, the Lions had four homers in the win, with Fischer adding her second of the day and her sixth of the season in the bottom of the fourth. The Lions forced the NCAA Softball mercy-rule by plating 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth when 13 batters came to the plate.

Fischer finished the day by going 3-for-4 with two homers, three runs scored and six RBI in the win. Danielle Smith and Meghan Harman also had two hits in the winning effort for Loyola Marymount.

The Griffs will continue their Spring Break trip on Friday, March 25, when the team plays a non-league doubleheader at Long Beach State.
