The Canisius College softball team went 1-1 on the final day
of the Marina International Hotel Classic, with the Golden Griffins knocking
off Northern Colorado 2-0 before falling to the host Loyola Marymount Lions 6-4
in the nightcap. The Griffs are now 9-4 on the season, with the loss to Loyola
Marymount ending the team's six-game winning streak.
In the first game, Canisius posted its 2-0 win over Northern
Colorado on Caroline Main's one-hitter and on the power of the long-ball. Main
fanned six and saw her no-hit bid come to an end when Northern Colorado junior
Erin Geddis led off the sixth inning with a base hit through the left side of
the infield. Main earned her fourth win of the season in the circle, as she
allowed only two Northern Colorado base runners to reach third base. With one
out in the bottom of the first, sophomore Katie Medina drilled her first homer of the season over the fence in right to put the Blue and Gold on the
scoreboard. The Griffs added an insurance run in the sixth after sophomore
Stephanie Pfentner hit her third homer of the season, a solo shot, over the
wall in left center with two outs in the frame. Canisius wrapped up the game
with six hits.
In the second game of the day, Loyola Marymount broke open a
tied game with a four-run fifth inning. The Blue and Gold took a 1-0 lead in the
second inning after an RBI-single by Lauren Falzone, but the Lions scored two
runs in the home half of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Canisius knotted the
game at 2-2 in the top half of the fifth with an RBI-single off the bat of
junior Lizzy Gatto. From there, Loyola Marymount scored four times in the fifth
to take a 6-2 lead, with the key hit coming from Danielle Smith, who drove in
two runs with a single down the right field line off losing pitcher Amanda
Baun, who gave up six runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking
six.
The Griffs racked up 13 hits in the loss to Loyola Marymount
and ended up leaving nine on base. Six Canisius hitters had multi-hit games,
with Medina posting three hits and two runs scored and Katie Lancellotti added
a pair of doubles to the losing cause.
Canisius will return to action Tuesday, March 22, as the
team takes on UC Riverside in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch at
Riverside's Harrison Field is set for 4 p.m., eastern time.
