Softball Gets Two More Wins in Maryland

The Canisius College softball team posted a pair of wins on Sunday on the final day of the UMBC/Coppin State Invitational in Baltimore, Md. The Golden Griffins started the day with a 9-1 win over Morgan State in five innings before bouncing host UMBC 3-2 in the second contest of the afternoon. Canisius is now 6-3 on the year.

In the 9-1 victory over Morgan State, Canisius scored single runs in the top of the first and second before posting six runs on the scoreboard in the top-half of the third, with the key hitting coming from sophomore Katie Medina, who drove in two runs with a single to left field. Medina would later score in the frame as the Blue and Gold scored their six runs on four hits with 11 batters strolling up to the plate.

Senior Paige Freiberger went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in the win, while fellow senior Lauren Hope went 2-for-3 witha  triple, an RBI and three runs scored. Freshman Jen Consaul earned her first college win in the circle for the Griffs as she allowed just one hit while striking out three in four innings of work.

In the second game, the Griffs scored two runs in the top of the first and ended up scoring a single run in the top of the sixth on an RBI-triple by Lauren Falzone in a 3-2 win over UMBC. Junior Katie Lancellotti put Canisius on the scoreboard first with a single through the left side in the top of the first to drive in Lizzy Gatto and Medina. The host Retrievers scored a run in the third to make the score 2-1 before Falzone's triple drove in Lancellotti, who reached earlier in the inning with a leadoff base hit. UMBC scored a run in the seventh to cut the score to 3-2, but sophomore hurler Amanda Baun was able to get the third out with runners at first and third.

Baun earned the win after she went the distance and allowed two runs on six hits while walking six and striking out six. Freiberger added two more hits to the winning effort for the Blue and Gold, while Lancellotti finished the game with two hits, two runs batted in and a stolen base.

The Griffs will head west to open their West Coast swing March 18, with games against Bethune-Cookman and Utah Valley on the first day of the Marina International Hotel Showcase in Los Angeles.
