Canisius Athletics Recognizes Fall Semester Academic Achievement

With 14 of Canisius College's 16 varsity intercollegiate teams reporting a semester grade point average of 3.0 or better and 13 student-athletes boasting a perfect 4.0 GPA, the athletic department is proud to announce that the College's 312 student-athletes recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.086 for the 2010 fall semester. This marks the eighth consecutive semester where Canisius student-athletes have surpassed a cumulative 3.0 GPA.

A total of 185 student-athletes were awarded with a semester GPA of 3.0 or better, which breaks down to 59 percent of the student-athlete population at the College. After the 2010 fall semester, 70 percent of Canisius' student-athletes have graduated on time, which exceeds the school's undergraduate mark of 65 percent for all other full-time students. Four of the 13 student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the 2010 fall semester are repeat achievers.

The athletic department is also proud to announce that six programs posted their highest fall GPAs over the last four years, with baseball, men's lacrosse and men's swimming and diving joining the group of teams with a team GPA of 3.0 or better. Leading the way in the fall semester was the synchronized swimming program, which posted a team grade point average of 3.50. The women's basketball team ranked second with a semester GPA of 3.45, with cross country placing third after earning a semester GPA of 3.42. Volleyball (3.38) and men's cross country (3.32) round out the top five. Other programs with a team GPA better than 3.0 for the fall semester include the women's swimming and diving and hockey programs (3.31), women's soccer (3.30), golf (3.29), women's lacrosse (3.21), softball (3.20), baseball (3.08), men's lacrosse (3.04) and men's swimming and diving (3.03).

The College's five fall teams (men and women's cross country, men and women's soccer and volleyball) combined to place 28 student-athletes on the MAAC All-Academic Teams. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in standing with two years at the College and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
