Softball Falls to Akron and Towson

The Canisius College softball dropped a pair of game on the second day of the CofC Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., falling to Akron 10-3 in the first game before losing the nightcap to Towson by a score of 5-1. The Golden Griffins are now 2-2 on the season.

In the first game, Akron (6-3) scored the game's first six runs before the Blue and Gold got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the fifth with a three-run frame. Canisius loaded the bases to start the rally, and junior Lauryn Chris knocked in a run when she earned a bases-loaded walk. After pop-up in the infield served as the Griffs' first out of the inning, senior Paige Freiberger knocked in two runs when she reached base safely on a misplayed ball by Akron's shortstop. Emily Helbig followed Freiberger with a base hit through the right side of the infield which allowed Valorie Nappo to score from third.

That would be all the runs the Griffs would tally in their first loss of the season. The Zips added four insurace runs in the top-half of the seventh, as Akron posted its 10 runs on 10 hits. For the game, Canisius registered five hits in the losing effort, with Nappo going 2-for-4 with a run scored and Helbig adding a hit and an RBI. Junior Lauren Falzone also had a hit and a run scored for the Blue and Gold.

Canisius junior hurler Caroline Main took the loss for Canisius after she allowed five runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out four in four innings of work.

In the nightcap, Towson (2-1) scored three times in the top of the first and never looked back as the Tigers posted a 5-1 win over Canisius. The Griffs' lone run crossed the plate in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore Chloe Contreras singled through the right side with two outs to knock in teammate Katie Lancellotti for her first career RBI. Sophomore pitcher Amanda Baun was handed the loss in the circle for Canisius after she allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Junior Lizzy Gatto had one of the team's six hits in the loss, a double which came in the home half of the second inning.

The Griffs will close out their stay at the CofC Cougar Classic Sunday at 10 a.m., when the team takes on East Tennessee State.
