Canisius College freshman Kayla Hoohuli was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday.

Hoohuli averaged 12.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in two Canisius wins last week. The freshman set career highs with 18 points and nine rebounds in the 63-42 win over Colgate. Hoohuli also made four 3-pointers in the game while converting all six of her free-throw attempts. Hoohuli scored seven points in the win at Bucknell, including a key three-point play late in the game while also taking two charges in the contest.

Hoohuli is the first Golden Griffin to receive a weekly honor during the 2011-12 season. Last season, Canisius set a program and league record with four freshmen earning MAAC Rookie of the Week honors.

Canisius starts a three-game road stretch on Wednesday night, when the Golden Griffins take on cross-town rival the University at Buffalo. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
