Women's Basketball Pulls Away From Colgate

The Canisius College women's basketball team broke open the game with a 10-0 run midway through the second half en route to a 63-42 win over Colgate Unviersity in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins win their second straight game to even their record at 3-3 on the season.

Freshman Kayla Hoohuli led the Golden Griffins with career highs of 18 points and nine rebounds, including four 3-pointers. Sophomore Jen Morabito and junior Ashley Wilkes each had 10 points while junior Ashley Durham added nine points.

"We played very well on the defensive end, forcing Colgate into some tough shots. We really need to focus on completing those possessions with defensive rebounds," Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. "There are definitely areas for us to improve, and we're going to continue to work on them."

After Colgate scored the first basket of the game, Canisius scored the next seven points - all from Morabito. The sophomore made two free throws, drained a 3-pointer and hit a pull-up baseline jumper to put Canisius up 7-3. The Griffs pushed the lead to six points after a three-point play from Durham and another fast-break layup from the junior point guard.

After Colgate cut the lead to three points, the Griffs opened up a double-digit lead by scoring 11 straight points - that included three 3-pointers from Hoohuli in a span of just over two minutes - to go up 26-12. Canisius took a seven-point lead into the half.

Canisius maintained its lead between seven and 13 points for the first seven minutes of the first half. After two free throws from Candice Green made it 39-31 with 13:22 remaining, the Griffs scored 10 straight points, capped by 3-pointers from junior Allison Braun and Hoohuli, to go up 49-31 as the Raiders never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Green led Colgate (0-10) with 12 points while Kelly Reid had a game-high 14 rebounds. Canisius limited Colgate to 23.9 percent shooting from the floor.

Canisius starts a three-game road stretch on Wednesday, when the Golden Griffins play against cross-town rival the University at Buffalo. Game time at Alumni Arena is set for 7 p.m.
