The
Canisius College volleyball team completed its fourth sweep in as many matches
with a Senior Day victory over Siena College in the Koessler Athletic Center on
Sunday afternoon, ending the Saints' seven-match MAAC winning streak. The Golden Griffins won 26-24, 25-22, 25-18 to improve to
13-14 overall and 8-8 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Senior
Danielle Brawn led Canisius with 11
kills while junior Samantha Good had
nine kills. Senior Janelle Davis had
her seventh double-double of the season with 26 assists and 11 digs to go along
with six kills on nine attack attempts. Sophomore Roxanne Hernandez had five kills and five solo blocks while senior Joanna Burt had 10 digs.
"We
got away from our game plan early in the first set and had to refocus on what
we wanted to do," Canisius coach Cathy
Hummel said. "Once we did that, we found a lot of success and our team
built on the confidence they've developed the last few matches."
Siena
built a 19-14 first-set lead before the Griffs mounted their rally. Canisius
would go on a 7-2 run, capped by a kill from Good, to even the score at 21-21.
Canisius would win the final two points of the set - getting a kill from Brawn
and service ace from Good - to take the first set.
Canisius
used a 9-2 run midway through the second set to build a seven-point lead it would need. A
kill from sophomore Emily Elek put
Canisus up 18-11. The Griffs would build a 24-16 lead, but wouldn't win the set
until the seventh set point as Siena battled back by winning six straight points. A kill from Brawn
gave Canisius the 2-0 lead in the match.
The
Griffs trailed 11-9 in the third set before a 6-0 run on the serve of Severyn
gave them control of the set and the match. Canisius never let Siena get closer
than three points the rest of the way with two solo blocks from Hernandez closing out the match.
Colleen
Ahearn and Taylor Akana led Siena (11-14, 9-7 MAAC) with eight kills apiece. Elizabeth Ives had
seven blocks while Sarah Sivertson had 26 assists and Lesli Akeo had 17 digs.
Canisius
concludes its regular season with two road matches next weekend, starting at
Loyola. Match time on Saturday is set for 7 p.m.
Notes: Canisius
swept the regular-season series from the Siena, the first time Canisius has
defeated in both regular-season meetings since the MAAC went to a double
round-robin schedule in 2006... Prior to the start of the match, the Griffs
honored the four members in their senior class, Layne Adams, Brawn, Burt and Davis... Brawn led Canisius in kills for
the 19th time this season... Burt had double-digit digs for the sixth
time this season... Davis had a double-double for the 28th time in her
career... The five solo blocks by Hernandez were the most solo blocks by a Golden
Griffin since Leigh Launhardt had five against Siena on Nov. 5, 2006... Canisius won four straight matches in three sets for the first time since Sept. 17-30, 2006.
