The
Canisius College volleyball team carried over the momentum from last weekend's
two road wins to sweep Marist College at the Koessler Athletic Center on
Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins won 25-13, 25-15, 28-26 to improve to
12-14 overall and 7-8 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Junior
Samantha Good led all players with
13 kills to go along with a .462 attack percentage. Sophomore Roxanne Hernandez had nine kills and a
season-high five blocks. Senior Janelle
Davis had 33 assists while junior Allyson
Severyn had 28 digs.
"I
really think we carried over some momentum from the win over Manhattan to the
first two sets against Marist today," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "Our passing broke down a little bit in the
third set, but we really dug down and fought back to steal that third set."
Canisius
hit .500 in the first set, not committing an attack error on 26 attack
attempts. With the score tied at 9-9, the Griffs won 14 of the final 17 points
in the set, including seven straight on the serve of Severyn, to win the first
set. In the second set, the Griffs broke it open midway through again, using a
10-3 run to go up 18-10 on a kill from Hernandez. The Griffs hit .441 in the
second set en route to the 2-0 lead.
Marist
built a 14-7 lead in the third set and appeared to be en route to forcing a
fourth set. The Griffs were down 22-16, but scored four straight points to cut
the Marist lead to 22-20. The Griffs would fight off two set points, getting
kills from Hernandez and sophomore Emily
Elek to even the match at 24-24. After a Marist attack error gave the
Griffs a 25-24 lead, the Red Foxes would fight off two match points, but the
Griffs won the match on their third match point to complete the sweep.
Joanna
Foss led Marist with 12 kills and also had a double-double with 10 digs. Hanna
Stoiberg had 17 assists and nine kills.
Canisius
concludes its home schedule on Sunday, when the Golden Griffins host Siena
College on Senior Day. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
