St.
Bonaventure used a 15-1 run spanning the end of the first half and beginning of
the second half to break open the game en route to defeating the Canisius
College women's basketball team 74-58 in the Koessler Athletic Center on Monday
night.
Sophomore
Jamie Ruttle led Canisius with 17
points. Junior Ashley Wilkes had 13
points, a team-high seven rebounds and three blocks in 24 minutes off the
bench. Sophomore Jen Morabito made
all four of her shot attempts - all 3-pointers - as Canisius shot 7-for-15 from
behind the arc on the evening.
"St.
Bonaventure is a veteran team who takes advantage of when a team isn't playing
well during a stretch of the game. I could see our team struggling late in the first half but
couldn't find a way to stop it," Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. "When our offense flowed, I thought we created good
scoring opportunities. When it got stagnant, we rushed things and made bad
decisions."
Canisius
turned a 7-3 deficit into a 15-11 lead when the Griffs made five of eight
shots, capped by a layup from sophomore Jen
Lennox, to take the four-point lead just over five minutes into the game.
The Bonnies then held Canisius to one field goal during the next eight minutes,
going up 23-17 on a 3-pointer from Jessica Jenkins. Canisius battled back with
an 8-2 run, getting the third 3-pointer of the half from Morabito, a layup from
Wilkes and a jumper form Lennox, to tie the game at 25-25 with 3:48 left in the
half.
St.
Bonaventure (2-0) then held Canisius without a field goal for the next five
minutes as the Bonnies went on the 15-1 run to break the game open. That run
included the Bonnies making five of seven shots, capped by another 3-pointer
from Jenkins, to go up 40-26.
Canisius
could never cut the lead to single digits the rest of the way. The Bonnies
extended their lead to as many as 21 points - 63-42 - after a 3-pointer from
Chelsea Bowker, one of four 3-pointers in the game for Bowker.
Four
Bonnies reached double figures, led by 18 points from Megan Van Tatenhove.
Bowker had 15 points while Jenkins had 14 points and CeCe Dixon added 12
points. The Bonnies shot 50 percent from the floor, including 9-for-9 from
behind the arc.
Canisius
plays its first road game of the season on Saturday, when the Golden Griffins
face Towson. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
