Volleyball Falls In Three At Marist

The Canisius College volleyball team fell in three sets to Marist College in the McCann Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins lost 25-15, 25-21, 25-21 and drop to 7-11 overall and 2-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Senior Danielle Brawn led Canisius with 10 kills to go along with seven digs. Senior Janelle Davis had 33 assists and seven digs while freshman Olivia Chrzanowski had eight kills and three blocks.

"This isn't to disrespect Marist because they are a good team, but today's loss wasn't because of our skill set or lack of preparation," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We're losing matches because we're lacking the desire and want to be a successful team."

Marist scored six straight points early in the first set and broke the set open by going up 12-4 after a kill from Hanna Stoiberg. The Red Foxes would go on to easily win the first set 25-15. Canisius built a lead in the second set with a 10-4 run, turning an 8-8 tie into an 18-12 after a kill from Chrzanowski. Canisius was up 21-16 after a kill from Brawn, but the Red Foxes would win the final nine points of the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Marist went up 16-11 in the third set before Canisius won five straight points, capped by a service ace from Brawn, to knot the match at 16-16. Marist came right back with a 5-0 run of its own to take control the set and eventually close out the match.

Grace Hill led Marist with a match-high 15 kills and posted a double-double with 10 digs. Joanna Foss had 12 kills as the Red Foxes hit .392 in the match.

Canisius returns to the Koessler Athletic Center for a five-match homestand, starting against Rider University on Saturday afternoon. Match time is set for 2 p.m.

Notes: Canisius lost in the McCann Center for the third time in the last six seasons... Brawn led Canisius in kills for the 14th time this season... Davis had 30-plus assists for the ninth straight match... Senior Layne Adams had an attack percentage of .400 or better for the fourth straight match... Chrzanowski had eight or more kills for the fourth time in the last five matches... Marist's attack percentage of .392 was the highest by a Canisius opponent in a conference match since Manhattan hit .424 on Nov. 9, 2008.
