The
Canisius College volleyball swept Saint Peter's and then completed a sweep of
Manhattan College at the Yanitelli Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden
Griffins defeated the Peahens 25-19, 25-12, 25-20 and defeated the Jaspers
25-23, 25-17, 25-19 to improve to 11-14 overall and 6-8 in the Metro Atlantic
Athletic Conference.
The
match against the Jaspers was resumed after a power outage at Riverdale Country
School on Saturday caused the match to be suspended after one set. The power
outage was due to the snowstorm affecting the East Coast.
Senior
Danielle Brawn had 15 kills in each
match, and recorded a double-double against the Jaspers when the outside hitter
posted 15 digs. Junior Samantha Good
hit .500 or better in each match, posting 11 kills and one error on 20 attempts
against Manhattan and 10 kills and one error on 17 attempts against Saint Peter's
while recording six blocks on the day. Senior Joanna Burt had 10 digs and three service aces against Saint
Peter's while senior Janelle Davis
had 38 assists on 42 team kills against Manhattan.
"Dealing
with the most off-the-court distractions that we've had all season, I was
really pleased with the way our team stayed focused on the court to get two
wins," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel
said. "I felt we played really well, especially against Manhattan, to get two much-needed wins."
The
Griffs won the first set against Manhattan on Saturday, as they battled back
from a 13-8 deficit. Canisius used a 9-4 run to take a 17-16 lead on a kill
from sophomore Roxanne Hernandez.
Manhattan then took a 20-19 lead, but the Griffs scored four straight points,
including kills from Brawn and fellow senior Layne Adams, to go up 23-20. Two more kills from Brawn closed out
the set and gave the Griffs the 1-0 lead.
On
Sunday, Canisius broke open the second set midway though as the Griffs used a
9-1 run to go up 16-8. The Jaspers never seriously threatened the rest of the
set. In the third set, Canisius pulled away late as the Griffs scored three
straight points to turn a 17-17 tie into a 20-17 lead. The Griffs never let
Manhattan get within one and closed out the sweep.
Earlier
in the day against Saint Peter's, the Griffs easily won the first two sets.
With the score tied at 5-5, the Griffs won nine straight points on the serve of
Burt, to go up 14-5 and were never seriously challenged in the opening set.
Down 6-3 to start the second set, the Griffs went on a 15-1 run, including 10
straight points on the serve of Burt, to cruise to the second-set win. The
Griffs would break open a 16-16 tie in the third set by winning four straight
points and win the match.
Canisius
returns home for its final home matches of the 2011 regular season next
weekend. The Golden Griffins face Marist on Saturday, and Siena on Sunday.
Match time each day in the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 2 p.m.
