The
Canisius College volleyball team dropped its second consecutive home match,
losing in three sets to Iona College. The Golden Griffins lost 25-19, 25-14,
25-21 to fall to 9-13 overall and 4-7 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference.
Freshman
Olivia Chrzanowski had a team-high
seven kills in two sets off the bench. Senior Janelle Davis had 22 assists and two service aces while junior Allyson Severyn led all players with 19
digs. Junior Samantha Good had four
blocks while senior Danielle Brawn
had three blocks.
"We
didn't have any players step up when we needed to win crucial points in this
match," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel
said. "It's up to our team to regroup quickly as we're playing a very good
Fairfield team on Sunday."
Canisius
won the first three points of the match, but the Gaels came back by winning six
of the next seven points to go up 6-4. The teams stayed close as a block from
Good and sophomore Emily Elek
brought the Griffs within one at 16-15. The Gaels then won three straight
points to take control of the set and go up 1-0 in the match.
After
the Gaels easily won the second set, it appeared Iona would comfortably take
the third set as well, winning seven of the first eight points. Canisius battled its
way back into the set, using an 8-2 run to take a 14-13 lead after an Iona
error. The teams were tied at 18-18 after another Iona error, before the Gaels
took control of the set by winning four straight points and eventually won when
Canisius served out of rotation.
Alicja
Pawelec had a double-double with 11 kills and 12 assists while Madisyn Spench
had 10 kills on 20 attack attempts. Catrina Warrner had seven blocks while
Nicole Tamburri had 34 assists.
Canisius
ends its five-match homestand on Sunday, when the Golden Griffins face
Fairfield University. Match time is set for 2 p.m. in the Koessler Athletic
Center.
